9th day of CNY: Prayers to the Jade Emperor
A very grand celebration especially by Penang Hokkien people.
Many people say that on the 9th day of CNY, it's the Jade Emperor's birthday.
Today, my nanny told me that it is actually a Hokkien "Thanksgiving" to the Jade Emperor and not His birthday. The story goes way back in time, in China where the Hokkiens and the Cantonese people don't see eye to eye. There were fights between them and the Hokkiens went to the sugar cane plantation to hide. They thanked the Jade Emperor for giving them the sugar cane plantation as a hide-out, which saves their lives.
And that is why the sugar cane is a very important thing to have during the 9th day of CNY.
My family celebrated this at our kampung house.
my nanny's "bee ko" is the best!
after the prayers, families will then enjoy the food.
a must have is the roasted pork with porridge.
